RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C. Signal Innovations Group, Inc. (SIG) has been selected by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and The Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) to explore geophysical characterization and mapping to detect and locate unexploded ordnance (UXO). SIG's primary objective is to help reduce the number of excavations to be performed by the Department of Defense while retaining high UXO detection.
The award is for a period of performance of three years with an approximate cumulative value of $725,000. SIG will use its state-of-the-art computational models and data mining methods to develop algorithms that adaptively delineate regions that are clean of UXO. Additionally, classification and detection algorithms will demonstrate and evaluate detection of UXO without requiring excavation of all items, providing the opportunity to leave non-UXO items unexcavated. The methods to be demonstrated will also provide a mathematically rigorous means of adaptively augmenting a training data set based on the site-dependent observed data.
